Introduction to the Cell
It's homecoming week! Should be exciting and very busy. Try to stay focused in class.
You are turning in your Biochemistry Test Remediation first thing today. You will also be turning in your signed progress reports that I passed out to you last Friday.
I will be checking your cell unit vocab and objectives for homework credit. Remember, you don't answer all the objectives yet. You can go back and fill them in as we learn them. All you do for the initial assignment is write the objective out on a separate sheet and leave space to answer it in the future.
Today you will be doing some reading from the text book. The introduction to the cell reading assignment is due by the end of the hour.
You should have plenty of time to finish it. We will go over the answers together. You will then be spending the rest of the hour working on memorizing your cell organelle functions.
Warm-Up:
What have you studied about cells in the past?

Biochemistry Test Remediation
Today is the test remediation for biochemistry.
I will pass back your scantron. Then you will circle all the numbers on the remediation that you got wrong on the test.
You may use your notes, book, or ask a friend or me for help in order to answer the essay that matches with the question numbers you circled.
While the class is working on essays, you may choose to do a verbal test with me to regain points on your test. This option is only for those students who really know the material and just made a few mistakes on the test.
The remediation is due Monday.
You also must define the vocab and write out the objectives for our next unit on cells. I will hand out the Cell unit standards and vocabulary today as well.
Warm-Up:
How did you prepare for the biochemistry test?
What will you do differently next time?

Biochemistry Test
Test Day!
Take the test and then complete the issues and decisions paper.
If you are gone, you will need to make up the test the day you return and get the issues and decisions paper from me. It is titled, "Is Organic food really better for you?"
This paper needs to be turned in Friday.
I am grading it based on: complete sentences, restating the question in the answer, using supporting evidence in your answer, and using appropriate language (i.e. no slang, texting language, or abbreviations).
Warm-Up:
Mind "dump"
write down everything you are desperately trying not to forget just before the test. Those thoughts that are on the tip of your tongue and you are itching for me to pass out the test because you really need to write them down. Basically, it is a cheat sheet that you create using your notes (although I am not letting you use it on the test)

S'mores!!
Happy Monday. I hope you all had a relaxing weekend because we have a full week ahead of us.
I am checking in the organic compound comparison chart for homework credit today. We will go over it for those of you who were unsure of how it should be filled out.
Then we are finishing up our "occurrence of water in living things" lab (started last Thursday). That means will will gather our last data set and graph it. The graph will help us to analyze the data and refresh our memories as to how graphs should be constructed. There are questions that must be answered.
Next, I will be using some delicious treats to illustrate polymerization of macromolecules. You will have a chance to eat in class.
While we are enjoying our snack, you will work on your Chemicals of Life Study Guide, due Wednesday.
Warm-Up:
What is the result of hydrolysis of a carbohydrate? a protein? a lipid? a nucleic acid?

Beginning Biochemistry
Today we are starting our unit on biochemistry. I will check to see that you have completed your vocabulary, standards on a separate sheet, and a visual representation of the 6 most common elements.
Then we will start a lab called % of water in living things. This will be an ongoing lab for the next week. We will collect data each day to be graphed.
The notes we are taking today are on the chemical basis of life. We will fill in the blanks through dehydration synthesis and hydrolysis.
Your assignment is to illustrate those two principles. You do not have to color them, but you may if you wish. I just want you to come up with a picture to help you remember each process.
Warm-Up:
What is the difference between an atom, an element and a compound?
P.S. The test scores yesterday were the highest they have ever been! Congratulations guys!!
First test re-take will be during summit on Monday (Sept 20th) Let me know by tomorrow if you are planning on taking it.

First Test!
Today is our first test! It's only 20 multiple choice questions, so it's actually more like a quiz. I hope you all studied.
If you are absent today, you will need to come in during summit to make up this test the day you return.
I will begin class by giving you credit for completing the scientific method experimental design worksheet that we worked on in class yesterday. I will answer any questions you may have before the test.
Then we will take the test.
After the test you will pick up the biochemistry unit objectives and vocabulary.
Your assignment is to define the vocab words using your text book, dictionary, or internet. I recommend putting them on flash cards. This is a great study tool.
You will also need a separate sheet of paper to write out the objectives. What I mean by this is you will read through each objective and then write down what you already know about it. You may not know much at this point. That is OK. You will be able to write something for each objective by the end of the unit. Leave yourself space as you write out each of the objectives so you can add more information later.
The third part of your assignment is going to require some creativity. You must look in your book (chapter 2) for the 6 most common elements in all living things and then visually represent them in some way. Some students like to write out the element names in different colors, some draw a picture, some create a crossword type pattern. Ultimately, you want a sheet of paper that captures your attention and will help you remember those 6 elements.
Reminder: Learning logs are due tomorrow for extra credit.
Warm-Up:
Why is it ineffective to test more than one variable at the same time?
P.S.
I am feeding the snake tomorrow during summit. Hope to see you there!

Social Contract
We made it through the first day! It was wonderful to see all your smiling faces and begin to learn all of your names. I will try my best to be quick about the learning names part.
Today you are going to turn in the 10 to 1 facts about yourself and the signed parent/guardian information sheet (if you have it) and then we will be creating a social contract for our class.
The 4 questions you will ask yourself are:
1. How do you want to be treated by me?
2. How do you want to be treated by each other?
3. How do you think I would like to be treated by you?
4. How should we treat each other when there is conflict?
We will compile all our answers and come up with a set of guidelines that we would like to follow as a class and hold each other accountable to.
Then we will work in groups on an activity called The Martian vs The Car.
This sheet deals with the characteristics of all living things. These 8 things can be found on pages 16-19. Each one will be defined and or described in notes that you will write as a class.
