If you've been anywhere near a TV in the past couple of months, I'm sure you've heard about the devastating effects of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Bird, fish and plant species alike are all suffering from damage caused by the ever spilling oil. An interesting article in Discover Magazine has posed this question:
Should We Just Euthanize the Gulf's Oil-Soaked Birds?
For those of you unfamiliar with the term
euthanize, it means to end a life humanely in order to relieve pain or suffering.
Take a minute to read the article and tell me what you think.
Who should make this decision?
This article really got me thinking. I guess I had just always assumed that it was what should be done. However, in the process of cleaning them, are we causing them more harm by keeping them in captivity and then releasing them in an unfamiliar environment?
ReplyDeleteI think that my belief agrees with the view that we owe it to them. Even if we are not able to save every animal affected by the oil spill, saving some is better than nothing. They are part of this planet too.
If there was a way to guarantee the birds could be cleaned effectively and have a quality of life afterward, then I definitely think we should try. Otherwise the birds are being put through misery and have no real future.

I have to agree with Carloyn. I hate the idea of the birds suffering and not being able to have a quality life afterward.
ReplyDeleteI would definitely save as many animals as I could. After all, we created the mess, we should save as many as we can. Being cleaned up is better then death.

Maybe we should euthanize greedy and irresponsible corporations. Of course, I like to drive my car...
